Revive your lawn: Essential tips after winter
These are lawn care tips for helping your lawn recover from winter and encourage healthy growth in time for summer.
The best way to start preparing your lawn for spring is to start by giving it a good rake to remove leaves, moss and dead grass. This will help to expose the grass to the sunlight again and encourage the air to reach the soil which will help it to germinate.
Moss can be treated and removed with a scarifier or a springbok rake. This will help especially following a damp winter. These treatments will help to improve drainage, and the spring sunlight will help to stop the moss from coming back.
Once the grass begins to grow, carry out your first mow but keep the blades a little higher than usual to avoid stressing it too early.
Spring is the best time to start treating and getting rid of weeds as it stops them from coming back later in the summer.
Feeding your lawn with a nitrogen rich spring fertiliser will help it green up and encourage growth.
If the soil feels compacted or water tends to sit on the surface, aerating with a fork or aerator can improve drainage and root development.
It is also a good idea to overseed any thin or bare patches and keep them lightly watered until new grass begins to grow.
Finally, while spring often brings enough rain, only water during dry spells, making sure to water deeply rather than little and often.
Following some or all these tips will help improve your lawn into the summer months.
