Dahlias are striking, tuberous, sun-loving perennial plants that bloom from the middle of summer right through to the autumn. They are known for their bushy, tuberous roots and vibrant, composite flowers and are members of the Asteraceae family, native to Mexico and Central America.

Planting
Dahlia tubers should be planted after the last frost when soil temperatures reach at least 60°F (15°C). Dig a hole 6–8 inches deep, amend heavy clay soil with compost or sand for proper drainage, and place the tuber horizontally with the growing point facing up. Medium and dwarf varieties can thrive in containers, while taller varieties need space to accommodate their mature size. Plant tubers a few days after tomatoes to ensure soil warmth and avoid planting in shaded areas to prevent leggy growth and fewer flowers.
Sunlight and Soil
Dahlias require 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily, preferably morning sun, with some protection from intense afternoon heat in very hot climates. They prefer well-draining, fertile soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.5–7.0) to prevent tuber rot.
Watering and Feeding
Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Overwatering can cause tuber rot, while under-watering may reduce bloom quality. Fertilize with a balanced, low-nitrogen fertilizer to encourage strong stems and abundant flowers.
Maintenance
– Staking: Tall varieties may require support to prevent stems from bending or breaking.
– Pinching and Deadheading: Remove spent blooms to encourage continuous flowering.
– Winter Care: In colder regions, dig up tubers after the first frost, dry them, and store in a cool, frost-free location for replanting next season.
