Early Spring Treatments for a Healthier Lawn
As temperatures begin to rise, March is the ideal time to give your lawn the care it needs to bounce back from cold, damp conditions. A well-timed spring lawn treatment now can make all the difference to its health and appearance in the months ahead.
Target Moss Early
If moss is a persistent problem, apply a moss control treatment — ideally one containing iron sulphate — to blacken and kill it before removal. Always scarify after treatment to rake out the dead moss and prevent regrowth.
Start with Scarification
Scarifying — removing the build-up of dead grass, moss and thatch — helps your lawn breathe and improves water and nutrient penetration. Use a spring-tine rake for small areas or a mechanical scarifier for large lawns. Once done, your lawn may look a little rough, but this step clears the way for strong new growth.
Feed for Recovery
A balanced spring lawn feed, rich in nitrogen, will encourage lush green growth and help your grass outcompete weeds and moss. Apply fertiliser after scarifying to avoid removing it, and always follow up with watering if conditions are dry.
Overseed Bare Patches
March is also a great time to repair patchy lawns. After scarifying, overseed thin or bare areas with a suitable grass seed mix. Rake in lightly and keep the soil moist for successful germination. Choose a blend that suits your garden’s conditions—shady, dry, or high-traffic areas all benefit from tailored seed types.
